Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts; Gabriel Brenner; Charcoal; 8”x10”; 2012
This is my first drawing in my Negatives series, which examines the ability we have to mask our true emotions and the inability of people to see through that mask. We cannot keep these walls up all the time, however, so I want to show lapses in these people’s masks through an unbiased eye: a film camera. Film (for the most part) captures things the way they truly are, whether they be utterly beautiful or terrifyingly honest.
With this one, I was sort of debating whether or not to add a tear streaming down her face, but I felt that the pensive tenseness of her facial expression said everything much more subtly. I’m also a little upset about the quality of the scan. I can’t get it to look any better. The scan makes my drawing look much more gritty than it is :( oh well. Enjoy :D!

Not A Word Was Needed; Gabriel Brenner; Pencil; 18 3/8”x27 3/8”; 2011
I was informed last Thursday that this drawing I did won a regional Gold Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards! It’s now going on to be judged nationally against all other Gold Key recipients in the nation. Let’s hope I win a national Gold Key, too :D!
